Are you interested in volunteering at a winter warming center or a summer cooling center? We are looking for volunteers to help us!

Please contact Miriam Magaña Lopez at miriam.magana@cityofvallejo.net to be added to our volunteer database. When an extreme weather event happens and it triggers an opening, we will contact volunteers with anticipated needs. As a volunteer you can chose to volunteer once or as many times as you'd like.

Volunteer Role: Volunteers help guests sign in and out of the warming/cooling center, offer blankets/pillows, and food/drinks, as available. Volunteers may be asked to help pass out flyers with resource information and help unpack or pack up supplies depending on needs. All volunteers will get an over the phone or in-person orientation to help them feel prepared for their volunteer shift. All volunteers are required to fill out and sign the City of Vallejo and Greater Vallejo Recreation District (GVRD) volunteer application; the applications will be sent ahead of time.

Thank you for your interest in donating items to the Extreme Weather Centers. Donated items have been appreciated by the center guests. If you want to donate items, please coordinate with Miriam Magaña Lopez at miriam.magana@cityofvallejo.net to determine a drop off time and location. Please do not drop items off at the center without prior coordination since we have limited storage space.

Items that we welcome at Warming Centers:

-Non-perishable snacks that are individually wrapped such as granola bars, nuts, oatmeal cups, cup ramen, etc.

-Hot chocolate, tea packets or instant coffee

-Disposable hot drink cups, mixing sticks

-Warm accessories such as new socks, gently worn beanies & scarfs. All items must be new and/or clean. Unfortunately due to lack of storage space we cannot accept other clothing items; please reach out to other groups in Vallejo who may accept these items.

-If you want to provide a warm meal for either dinner or breakfast when we open a warming center, please reach out to us before dropping off food.

Items that we welcome at Cooling Centers:

-Non-perishable snacks that are individually wrapped such as granola bars, nuts, or other snacks.

-Drinks: Bottles of water, sport drinks etc

Vallejo, CA - The City of Vallejo is pleased to announce the completion of its Extreme Weather Policy.

This policy provides guidelines and procedures for staff to open an “Extreme Weather Center” in the City of Vallejo for the unsheltered population or community members without access to a viable shelter with a heat/cooling source. The space will provide temporary relief and respite for citizens during Extreme Weather Events.

The following will dictate the opening of an Extreme Weather Center. Anytime the National Weather Service (“NWS”) forecasts:

• Two (2) consecutive days with overnight lows below 35 degrees Fahrenheit
• Two (2) consecutive nights of rainfall with major or extreme risk levels as determined by the NWS
• Two (2) consecutive days with highs of 100 degrees Fahrenheit
• The forecast of an extreme event that poses a risk to life and safety
